Being a blogger is hard work, which means that your following can be beneficial for your business. One way to increase your followers on Twitter is through Twitter chats.

The best way to describe a Twitter chat is a group of people coming together on Twitter for about an hour each week to have a conversation that revolves around a specific hashtag.

You are apart of the conversation as long as you use the pre-determined hashtag. If you forget to use the hashtag, no one will see your tweets in the conversation. This is a great way to engage in live conversations about topics that interest you.

Start blogging + Actually earn an income

By engaging in a Twitter chat, not only do you get to interact with individuals in your niche, but you can get answers to questions, grow your social media presence and build your brand at the same time.

Since I began to implement strategies to treat my blog like a business, I made it my mission to participate in as many Twitter chats as possible. You can read about how to do it here: 10 Tips: Run Your Blog Like a Business.

It’s not easy and takes a bit of commitment to be a regular participant in several chats each week.

A sure fire way to find a Twitter chat is to search #twitterchat in the Twitter search box. Here you will find an exhaustive list of twitter chats. All you have to do is pick one in your niche and follow! You can find out about specific date and times of Twitter chats in the Twitter bios. Regardless of your niche, there’s a Twitter chat for you to participate in.

Now on to how I increased my Twitter followers by 329% in 5 months.

For the most part, I began to see an increase in followers by actively participating in Twitter chats. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret…Engaging with and following everyone in the Twitter chat will increase your exposure and increase your chances of receiving a follow back. Active participation means answering the questions and retweeting and liking others comments.

  • Use the right hashtag. Users can’t find you if you’re not using the Twitter chats’ specific hashtag
  • Follow the format. Many chats follow a Q&A format. The first question will start with “Q1…” and your response should be “A1…”
  • Follow the rules. Most chats don’t allow for self promotion of your products, services or brands

  1. Ashlee, I can’t get enough of Twitter chats. You know, if you turn notifications on (on Twitter) for each Twitter chat’s profile, you will never miss a beat. You won’t even have to remind yourself. Just jump on it when it’s time. Thanks for visiting.

  2. I am a huge fan of Twitter chats! Not only have I seen a huge growth over time, but I have also made friends all over the world and in different niches as well! Thegirlgang chat is definitely my favorite, but I have been loving sassybloggers to focus more on blogging and building my blog up. Twitter chats are definitely a bloggers best friend!

I used to use Twitter chats last year, I fell off the wagon. I guess its time to revisit coz you are right. They did help me build by follower base!

  4. Great tips ! I am part of a ‘private chat group’ of a few girls. It’s rather a retweet each others group than a chatty group. Will certainly try out your tips and join in a chat, we might meet soon Thanks for sharing your knowledge !

  6. Keating, that’s the beauty of getting in on one. You can just jump in when you are online. If I forget, I go back and answer all the questions although it’s no longer live. Thanks for stopping by.

  7. Gurki, a lot of twitter chats are in GMT time zones. I usually convert my time zone to ensure that I am able to participate. You can participate at a time that is convenient for you. Thanks for visiting.

  8. I love participating in Twitter chats! It’s such a great way to meet new people and gain new friends and followers. My big issue is that I always end up forgetting about them. I need to start writing them down in my calendar so I remember when they’re happening. 9 times out of 10, I’ll be skimming Twitter and see that there’s a chat going on and jump right in lol

  9. Awesome tips! I’ve been using twitter hashtags and reaping good results. Haven’t been using chats as much. Thanks for the timely reminder 🙂

  10. That’s some serious follower action! A little tip for Hootsuite users: you can open a stream for a specific hashtag (go to add stream, select search, and search for the hashtag). You can keep the Twitter chat in one stream while doing your normal Twitter activities in another. You can even take part in two or more chats at the same time!

  11. Monica, Yes, you should! I have had so much success with Twitter as most of my target audience is on there. Plus, you get to build strong, lasting relationships. Hope to see you on a chat soon.

  12. Oooh I’ve been thinking about jumping back to being really active on Twitter and I think this just sold me! Thanks for the suggestions!

  13. I had no idea I was so under-utilizing Twitter. I know about chats, but I’ve never participated, mostly because I’m intimidating by how they work. I guess it’s time for me to just jump in!
